CHIJ Toa Payoh, Thursday, April 2, 2015 — Raffles Girls’ School (RGS) defeated Nanyang Girls’ High (NYGH) 33–29 in the second round of the National B Division Netball Championship.

The first whistle saw NYGH score two consecutive goals, with little glitches in passing. RGS stepped up their game with quicker passes and clearer communication on court, bringing the match to a tie at 7–7 by the end of the first quarter.

RGS dominated in the second quarter, forcing a succession of turnovers. RGS controlled the pace of the game well in the first half with fast and immaculate passes, leaving no room for interceptions. Tricia (GS) and Valerie (GA) of RGS displayed great chemistry in their second passes and quick rotation as they successfully potted their shots without much difficulty. RGS outscored NYGH 11–2 to lead 18–9 by half time.

In the third quarter, NYGH opted for high lob passes to their Goal Shooter who towered over the RGS defence. This proved effective as NYGH capitalized on a 7–1 scoring run to trail by two (17–19). However, RGS quickly responded with a 5–1 run to take the 24–20 lead to end the third quarter.

RGS were eager to keep their lead in the final quarter and thus focused more on their defence, forcing NYGH to make hesitant passes which were easily intercepted. However, NYGH shooters refused to give up and battled against RGS’s defence in the shooting circle, scoring four more points to push it to 25–29. RGS’s strong second quarter effort helped them to the eventual 33–29 victory.

RGS captain, Angelina, said, “I think we were quite scared when we saw Miki, our Goal Keeper, injured. We wanted to remain composed and continue to put up a good fight, which we managed to do so.”

“Nanyang’s mental strength is truly commendable and they showed that they really wanted the game.” she added.

RGS will next take on Methodist Girls’ School at 3 p.m., while NYGH will face St. Margaret’s Secondary at 2 p.m. Both games will take place at CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) on Tuesday, April 7.
