CHIJ Toa Payoh, Tuesday, March 31, 2015 — CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) defeated Bukit Panjang Government High (BPGHS) 48–13 to top their group in their final preliminary game of the National C Division Netball Championship.

CHIJ had previously won their preliminary games against CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ (54–13), and Cedar Girls’ Secondary (36–8). With the win, CHIJ topped Group D with a 3–0 win-loss record.

In the first quarter, CHIJ not only fought aggressively for the ball, but also put up a tight defence. Their stronger play prohibited BPGHS from getting to the net on many occasions for a successful shot. CHIJ displayed swift passes and strong teamwork to earn a seven-point (12–5) lead by the end of the quarter.

CHIJ continued their scoring streak in the second quarter with eight unanswered goals. CHIJ’s Goal Attack, Yewei, worked well on offence, as her running and link-up play fooled BP’s defence a couple of times. This quarter saw CHIJ extend their lead to a commanding 23–6.

Despite the best efforts of BPGHS to narrow the score margin, they were unable to disrupt CHIJ’s fluid play. Nevertheless, the team maintained their composure and managed to score four goals by the end of the quarter, reducing the deficit to 25 points.

CHIJ continued to dominate even in the last quarter, forcing BPGHS to play an exhausting game of catch-up. Although BP defenders persistently fought for every ball, they were unable to deny CHIJ’s strong offence. CHIJ were unstoppable and had no trouble finding their Goal Shooter, who consistently added points with her good finishing. She contributed seven out of the 13 goals scored in this quarter.

CHIJ continued to make their shots count, scoring relentlessly to take home a 48–13 win over BPGHS.

Bukit Panjang captain, Winnie Tan, said, “We could have done better for today’s match. However, I’m still proud of my team for coming so far even though we did not make it to the second round. We fought really hard together as a team.”
