Clementi Sports Hall, Tuesday, March 31, 2015 — Living up to their reputation as three-point specialists, North Vista Secondary’s shooters combined for nine three-pointers to beat Chung Cheng High (Main) 74–27 in the preliminary round of the National B Division Basketball Championship.
Clement Sim (#5) stepped up for North Vista in the absence of Sim Xuan (#8), who is nursing a leg injury, with five three-pointers, finishing with a game-high 18 points. Floor general Christian Pepito (#4) added three of his own as well, and tallied 14 total points, while Dominick Soh (#6) led Chung Cheng with a team-high seven points.
North Vista were unstoppable from range in the opening quarter, as Pepito (#4) and Sim (#5) combined for five treys in the frame. Coupled with their pressing defence, North Vista kept Chung Cheng at bay and denied them easy baskets.
However, in the second quarter, North Vista were reckless with the ball on offence, committing several turnovers. Despite a lacklustre output in the frame, they were able to hold on to a 15-point lead thanks to Chung Cheng’s shooting woes.
Sim Zhen (#13) ran amok after the break. Chung Cheng had no response as they allowed him to penetrate the paint with some nifty footwork. The forward scored 14 of his 16 total points in the frame, giving North Vista a 54–19 lead to enter the final quarter.
North Vista continued their offensive onslaught in the fourth quarter, outscoring Chung Cheng 20–8 to close out the convincing victory.
“I think we played really well today, both defensively and offensively,” said Sim Xuan (#8).
The North Vista captain added, “Chung Cheng gave us a good fight and played hard every quarter. But luckily for us, Clement (#5) was on fire. Our threes were going in.”
The victory is North Vista’s third straight in the Nationals and they will advance to the second round. Chung Cheng, on the contrary, hold a 1–2 win-loss record and will conclude their season.
