Clementi Sports Hall, Tuesday, March 31, 2015 — Riding on a strong first-half effort, Jurong West Secondary defeated Queenstown Secondary 65–43 in the preliminary round of the National B Division Basketball Championship, securing themselves a spot in the second round.
Kelvin Ser (#5) led Jurong West with a game-high 16 points, while teammates Jeff Tan (#4) and Sean Tiah (#9) added 13 and 10 points respectively. Cayvann Ong (#5) had 11 points for Queenstown.
Good ball movement defined Jurong West’s play throughout the game.
In the opening quarter, Queenstown’s backcourt had trouble breaking through Jurong West’s high 2-3 zone defence, diminishing their offensive strength. On the contrary, Jurong West, who boasted a physically bigger frontcourt, were able to extend their lead through fluid set plays and second chance opportunities.
Led by Tan (#4) and Ser (#5), Jurong West opened the second quarter with a 10–0 run to bolster their lead. Undaunted, Tan Guo Liang (#9) and Joel Cheow (#10) responded with a 6–0 run to reduce the bleeding for Queenstown, but a lack of supporting cast had them outscored by an eventual 12 points in the frame.
Queenstown increased their offensive pace after the break and held Jurong West scoreless in the remaining four minutes of the quarter. They managed to outscore Jurong West 13–9 in the frame and reduced the deficit to 18 points.
An unfortunate turn of events ruined Queenstown’s momentum in the final quarter, as Donavan Chan (#13) went down with an ankle injury after a collision with Jurong West’s Tan (#4). Queenstown were unable to recover from the momentum break and eventually conceded the game to their West Zone counterparts.
Jurong West improve to a 2–1 win-loss record and will advance to the second round alongside North Vista Secondary, who topped the group with a 74–27 victory over Chung Cheng High (Main). Queenstown’s loss is their third straight and they will not qualify for the second round.
