Jurong East Sports Hall, Friday, March 6, 2015 — CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) defeated National Junior College (NJC) 34–30 to clinch the South Zone B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship title.

Desiree Lee (CHIJ #14) scored a game-high 21 points, while Cheryl Eio (NJC #4) scored a team-high seven points. Cheryl’s teammate, Denise Lam (NJC #12), contributed six points.

CHIJ’s Joelle Thng (#15) scored the first points of the game with an easy under-basket. Along with Desiree’s (CHIJ #14) and-one fast break against Kai Ting (NJC #9), CHIJ held a 7–5 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Kai Ting (NJC #9) opened the second quarter with a three-pointer to take the lead. However, Desiree (CHIJ #14) managed to shake off two opponents for the easy basket. CHIJ easily reclaimed the lead. Jin Wen’s (NJC #6) floater reduced the deficit to three points at the end of the quarter.

Despite Desiree’s offensive presence, NJC were unfazed, held their ground and played tight defense against CHIJ. However, they still trailed 22–26 at the end of the quarter.

The tensions between both teams grew. NJC improved their play on both ends and almost caught up to CHIJ. NJC did well in the quarter but could not outscore CHIJ and eventually went down 30–34.

CHIJ’s vice-captain, Desiree (#14), said, “NJC did not disappoint us by having the spirit to continue the fight even till the end. They were not affected by the scores and continued to strive for every possession. NJC is a very good school to put up such a good fight.

“I feel that our team has to improve on our fitness level, so that we will be able to last even longer on court. This is our first time experiencing a full court press on us, so we were a little bit clumsy in trying to break the defense. We’ve got to learn how to break such defenses, before the Nationals start. However, we still played well.”
