Jurong East Sports Hall, Friday, March 6, 2015 — Fairfield Methodist School (Secondary) [FMS] defeated Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) [ACS] to clinch the South Zone B Division Basketball Championship title.

Xavier Ng (#13) led Fairfield to victory with a team-high of 16 points while Sherman Seet (#11) of ACS had a game-high 17. Gavin Tay (#11) of Fairfield was declared the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the final.

Sherman (ACS #11) got the game rolling with a finger roll layup, scoring two points for his team. Dinesh (ACS #15) added another two points with a bunny-hop. Despite the threatening offensive plays by ACS, FMS did not let their guard down and still put up their best defensive efforts. However, they were unable to fend off ACS’s attacks and trailed 6–13 at the end of the first quarter.

Kelvin Frany (ACS #7) started the second quarter with a euro-step layup. FMS started to attack the basket more aggressively in a bid to keep the game close. Gavin Tay’s (FMS #11) fast break layup sparked a 6–0 FMS run to trail 19–25 at the end of the half.

The third quarter commenced with Krison Sum (FMS #12) nailing a jump shot near the free throw line. Sherman (ACS #11) followed with a euro-step layup against two FMS defenders. Six straight points by FMS tied the game, forcing a timeout from ACS. FMS eventually outscored ACS 18–10 in the quarter to take a two-point lead.

In the final quarter, Kelvin (ACS #7) stepped up his game but Gavin and Xavier of Fairfield displayed strong chemistry as they did a fast break play, going past a whole line of ACS’s defense. FMS were able to hold on their lead for the title.

FMS captain, Krison Sum (#12), said, “Overall, I felt that our team showed a lot of resilience. Being able to climb up to this title definitely was not an easy thing to do but my team did their very best to last through the game.

“We were losing during the first half but we fought back. We definitely have to improve in every area be it denfense or offence. Our team have to improve together as we are still not up to the standard to reach the national level.

“Everyone in the team played well so i would not nominate any best player from our team. However, I want to praise Gavin (#11) as he was down with flu but he was still be able to put on an MVP performance. I also want to thank God for guiding our team to the finals. Without Him, we would not be able to make it so far. All glory to God,” added Sum.

Kelvin (#7), Captain of ACS (Barker), said, “I felt that we started the game well for the first half but were complacent in the second half and didn’t manage to catch up. We will learn our mistakes and we will train harder and qualify for National top 4.”
