Anglican High School, Monday, March 2, 2015 — Anglican High used a strong first quarter performance to upset defending champions Dunman Secondary 32–26 in the final of the East Zone B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship, denying the latter a three-peat.

This is Anglican High’s first zonal title since 2012.

“It’s a very happy moment for us today, and credits to the girls – they were very hardworking,” said Anglican High coach Tan Boon Sing in Mandarin.

Tan added, “Dunman were a tough opponent, but most importantly, the girls played extremely well in the first quarter, which was the deciding factor today. We managed to hold on to the lead because the communication between the girls was good throughout the rest of the game.”

Hot shooting from Clarice Tan (#5) and Carissa Chan (#7) catalyzed Anglican High’s offence, as they combined for 12 of their team’s 16 first-quarter points, while their defence held the defending champions to just six points. Tan (#5) and Chan (#7) eventually finished the game with 13 and seven points.

However, that was the only time Anglican High outscored Dunman in the game.

Led by Kattleya Miranda (#5), Marsha Folkoff (#8) and Nur Khaliesah (#9), Dunman gradually whittled the deficit to five points (25–30) with just under three minutes to play.

However, with 50 seconds remaining, Shannon Tham’s (#9) clutch basket extended Anglican High’s lead to seven points, denying Dunman a chance to tie the game.

A free throw by Nur Amirah (#12) was merely a consolation for Dunman as Anglican High closed out the 32–26 victory.

Anglican High captain, Navanee Lingam (#4), said, “We’re very grateful and at the same time, humbled for the opportunity. We’re going to fight as hard as we can in the Nationals. The further we advance, the better.”

“We lost our focus in the first half, and we need to prepare our minds and be ready for the game right from the start. We are going to start all over in training and give our 100 percent effort,” said Nur Khaliesah (#8).

The Dunman captain added, “This game will make us work harder for our future games. The loss doesn’t mean the end of the season for us, and who knows, we might still see Anglican High in the Nationals and defeat them. They are one of the strongest teams in the East Zone, but we want to be the strongest team and second to none.”
