PESEB, Thursday, February 26, 2015 — Led by Shah Asraff Khan (#13), a strong second half helped Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) clinch a 33–7 victory over defending plate champions Pioneer Secondary.

Early in the opening half, a free kick from Ryan Loo (#15) right through to Pioneer’s 20-metre line resulted in a Kieren Wong (#8) try. Loo (#15) converted to give ACS the early 7–0 lead.

However, after Wong’s (#8) try, both teams entered a deadlock as neither could penetrate through their respective 20-yard lines.

Pioneer were aggressive on the attack in the second half, taking advantage of unforced errors by ACS. (#14) took advantage of his small frame and agility to blow past ACS forwards, but the Pioneer winger lacked support from his teammates, allowing ACS to hold off the latter’s drives.

Midway through the half, Shah Asraff Khan (#13) executed a spectacular midfield tackle against Pioneer’s Muhammad Syazwan (#23), which led to a subsequent try by scrum half Jarrett Heng (#9). The ACS outside centre’s play sparked a 19–0 run to deal a resounding blow to Pioneer’s efforts.

In the dying minutes of the game, sparked by a good drive from scrum half Malcom Sim (#9), Muhammad Ali (#10) managed to penetrate through the middle lane for the try and subsequent conversion. However, in the ensuing possession, Pioneer’s momentary defensive lapse allowed Wong (#8) to record his second try of the game, while Loo (#15) converted to seal the 33–7 victory.

Jo-Ed Tay (#12) said, “In the first half, we weren’t that composed. Our forwards were unclear of what to do until the backs and scrum half edged them on.

“In the second half, the performance from the forwards was better. We managed to swing the ball out and the chances kept coming in,” added the ACS captain.

ACS will next play St. Joseph’s Institution at 3 p.m. on Monday, March 2, at PESEB, while Pioneer will face Raffles Institution at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, at Republic Polytechnic.
