Jurong West Sports Hall, Monday, February 16, 2014 — Yuan Ching Secondary (YCS) defeated Chua Chu Kang Secondary (CCK) 22–21 in their final group game of the West Zone B Division Netball Championship.
Yuan Ching previously defeated Regent, Hua Yi, NUS High and Unity 26–20, 66–0, 26–11 and 37–10 respectively. With both teams holding a prior 4-1 win-loss record, the game between Yuan Ching and Chua Chu Kang would decide who would advance to round two.
With the win, Yuan Ching joins fourth-seeded Bukit Panjang Govt. High in moving on to the second round, while Chua Chu Kang finishes third in Group D with a 4-2 win-loss record.
The match was a close affair with both teams matching each other point for point.
Chua Chu Kang went on a 4-1 scoring run early on in the second quarter as their GS, Weishan, dominated with her high shooting accuracy. She took advantage of her height to nab high balls over the Yuan Ching Goal Keeper and Goal Defence, converting several offensive rebounds into points.
On the other hand, the Yuan Ching defenders battled hard to bring the ball forward, but were unable to convert at the net. Yuan Ching’s Goal Defence, Rachel, held the fort in the goal third and created many turnovers for her team to attempt more shots. The second quarter ended with a scoreline of 11-10 in Yuan Ching’s favour.
Chua Chu Kang’s Centre, Hui Qian, made crucial interceptions for her team that were converted into goals. Despite having a smaller frame as compared to the Yuan Ching defenders, she executed several good runs by dodging past her defenders with her speed and aggression.
Chua Chu Kang outscored Yuan Ching 6–5 to tie the game at 16 apiece heading into the final quarter.
The final quarter was a more even affair, but Yuan Ching did well to close out the game. Their Goal Shooter and Goal Attack worked well in tandem in their attacking third. Both sides traded goals but ultimately, the Yuan Ching defenders made some important interceptions and forced a couple of turnovers to help her team hold on to their precious lead.
Yuan Ching were leading 22–21 and maintained their edge for the last minute of the fourth quarter, securing their spot in the second round by a hair-splitting one-point margin.
Chua Chu Kang’s captain, Cheryl Ang, said, “I think my team did well today. We definitely gave Yuan Ching a tough fight and didn’t give up till the end. I’m really proud of my team for coming this far.”
