Jurong West Sports Hall, Monday, February 16, 2014 — Hong Kah Secondary (HKS) defeated Dunearn Secondary (DSS) 19–16 in their final group game of the West Zone B Division Netball Championship.

With this win, Hong Kah complete their season with a 2–4 win-loss record. They went down to Hillgrove, Clementi Town, Jurongville and Nanyang Girls’ 14–35, 6–33, 17–37 and 4–61 respectively. Both Hong Kah and Dunearn did not qualify for the second round.

The difference in the score margin was not more than three points in the entire match.

The first quarter was a low-scoring affair, as both teams struggled to make their shots count and fell into a state of poor passing. Hong Kah managed to establish a slight lead, ending the quarter two points ahead of Dunearn at 3–1.

The second quarter proved to be a tougher fight for Hong Kah as Dunearn stepped up their defence in the goal circle, with their Goal Keeper and Goal Defender effectively pressuring the HKS shooters. Neither team made a significant push to try and take control of the game.

The consistency in game play by Dunearn paid off as they managed to score two goals in the last few minutes of the game to tie the quarter at 5 apiece. Dunearn trailed by two (6–8) at half time.

Dunearn’s GA stepped up offensively towards the end of the third quarter to score crucial points for her team. She played a pivotal role for Dunearn with good runs and effective second passes to her GS in the shooting circle. She contributed to four out of five goals scored in this quarter. Hong Kah held on to a 14–11 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Dunearn came out fighting in the final quarter, going on an early 3–0 scoring run to level the scores at 14-14. Hong Kah were eager to keep their lead and thus focused more on maintaining their composure and regaining their momentum, working the ball patiently down to their shooters.

Dunearn’s GA, Wendy, refused to give up and battled against Hong Kah’s defence in the shooting circle, scoring two unanswered goals towards the last few minutes of the game.

Although Dunearn pushed their opponents till the end, it was Hong Kah that emerged victorious at the final whistle 19–16.

Hong Kah’s captain, Xin Ying, said, “I felt that we could have done better as we were too rushed with our attacks. We had to constantly remind ourselves to play to our own pace and make better passes.”

“We have definitely improved this season. We became more bonded as a team and we encouraged each other to push on together as one. I’m really proud of my team for coming so far,” she added.
