Dunman Secondary School, Tuesday, February 10, 2015 — St. Hilda’s Secondary (SHS) defeated Pasir Ris Crest Secondary (PRC) 47–12 in the preliminary round of the East Zone B Division Netball Championship.

The win gives St. Hilda’s a 4-1 win-loss record. The third-seeded team previously defeated Siglap, Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ School and Damai 50–4, 23–19, and 43–23 respectively. Despite a 22–25 loss to Cedar Girls’ earlier, St. Hilda’s are likely to proceed to the second round by virtue of a superior point differential if they secure a win over Changkat Changi Sec in their final match.

Dominating from the start, St. Hilda’s raced to an early 12–5 lead. Led by Angelia (Goal Attack) and Melissa (Wing Attack), St. Hilda’s managed to score relentlessly. The players located their Goal Shooter, Si Jing, in the circle with well-executed passes, where she followed up to score points for the team. She was dominant offensively with her accuracy at the net, contributing to 11 out of 13 goals scored in the second quarter.

SHS went on a 13–4 scoring run to pull away 25–9 going into the half-time break.

Pasir Ris Crest were unable to break through St. Hilda’s tight defence, and thus faced difficulty in feeding their shooters with the ball in the third quarter. They managed to grab a couple of offensive rebounds, but were unable to convert on any of them. The defenders of Pasir Ris Crest tried to limit St. Hilda’s scoring with their diligent defence by intercepting passes in the centre third.

Pasir Ris Crest’s GS, Venus, tried her best to keep her team’s offense going in the second half. She contributed to two out of the three goals scored in the second half, including one long range shot in the final quarter. On the other hand, St. Hilda’s continued to convert well at the net, putting up a good game to finish 47–12 winners.

Pasir Ris Crest’s captain, Wen Xuan, said, “We played as a team together and we were determined to put up a tough fight.”

St. Hilda’s captain, Ho Yi Dan, said, “We worked hard for today’s game. However, there’s still room for improvement. The shooters from Pasir Ris Crest had very strong mental strength. They still converted their shots and continued to persevere.”
