Singapore Basketball Centre, Friday, January 6, 2015 — Canberra Secondary (CSS) defeated Orchid Park Secondary (OPS) 48–37 for their first win in the second round of the North Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

Canberra’s captain Dion Tan (CSS #7) was the game’s top scorer with 15 points, while Lau Ka Shing (OPS #9) scored a team-high 11 points, which included two three-pointers.

Both teams started off relaxed as they took turns to attack the basket with ease. As a result, the first quarter ended with a tie of 12–12, including two three-pointers from Lau Ka Shing (OPS #9) and So Jun Hao (OPS #12).

Canberra picked up momentum on both ends in the second quarter. As Orchid Park struggled to keep up, Canberra pulled away, making most of their free throws and knocking down a three-pointer by Fok Goon Teng (CSS #10). Hence, at half-time, Canberra held a 26–18 lead.

Into the third quarter, Canberra once again dominated with their strong defense. As Orchid Park faced difficulty in breaking through the impenetrable defense put up by Canberra, the visibly anxious Orchid Park players started to commit one too many fouls in the second half of the quarter. Canberra therefore took the opportunity to maintain the lead, ending the third quarter with a 34–23 lead.

The final quarter saw Canberra and Orchid Park players beginning to tire out. While there were an equal number of six free throws given, both teams missed most of their shots at the basket. Despite this, the two teams fought hard, depending on mostly free throws and layups. Both teams managed to gain 14 points each, hence keeping the gap unchanged at the end of the game. As a result, Canberra eventually brought home the 48–37 victory, reaching a total of five wins so far in the championship.

Canberra’s captain, Dion Tan (CSS #7), said, “Our countering and rebounding was really bad today. However, with teamwork, we managed to win the game and maintain the Canberra spirit.”

Canberra will next play Christ Church Secondary at 4.40 p.m. on Monday, February 9, while Orchid Park will also later face Christ Church Secondary at 12.00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 11.  Both games will take place at the Singapore Basketball Centre.
