River Valley High School, Friday, January 30, 2015 — Jurongville Secondary defeated Pioneer Secondary 28–12 in Group C of the preliminary round of the West Zone B Division Netball Championship.
Jurongville stifled Pioneer’s offence in the first half to open up a 10-point lead, which they maintained for the rest of the game.
Pioneer took awhile to settle down in the game, allowing Jurongville to race off to a 4–1 lead. Pioneer quickly recovered, putting an end to Jurongville’s offensive momentum. However, Jurongville pulled ahead to lead 9–3 after the first quarter as they went for loose balls and created turnovers.
The second quarter proved to be a tougher fight for Pioneer as Jurongville stepped up their defence, especially in the goal circle, with their Goal Keeper and Goal Defender effectively pressuring the Pioneer shooters. Jurongville held on to their momentum and led by 10 (14–4) at half time.
Poor shooting spells coupled with tight defence by Pioneer resulted in a closer contest in the third quarter.
Despite the 11-point gap heading in the last quarter, both teams continued to put up a good fight but Jurongville showed a greater control of the game which limited Pioneer’s chances.
The use of bounce passes in the goal circle proved effective for the Jurongville shooters in the second half. Jurongville’s GA, Chong Hey Ee, worked well on offence, as her running and link-up play fooled Pioneer’s defence a couple of times. Her high shooting accuracy towards the last few minutes of the game helped wrap up the 28–12 win for Jurongville.
“We could have worked more on our communication as well as our defence,” said Pioneer’s captain Nurul Azlin. “Jurongville put up a tough fight and they definitely deserved the win for their resilience and fighting spirit on court today.”
“Even though we were defeated, we will continue to work and train harder to do better for our next match,” she added.
Both schools are unlikely to qualify for the second round as third-seeded Nanyang Girls’ High and Clementi Town have yet to lose a game. The match between between both schools will take place at Jurong West Sports Hall on Monday, February 2, at 12 p.m.
