Tuesday, January 27, 2015 — The Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) Selection Committee chaired by Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Minister for Manpower and President of SNOC, selected approximately 950* athletes from all 36 sports yesterday in what was the first cut for the Singapore contingent for the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games on home soil in June this year.

The National Sports Associations (NSAs) which have yet to finish their selection process will have till 2 April at the Appeals Committee Meeting to submit their results to meet the qualification for the 28th SEA Games.

Chris Chan, the secretary-general of SNOC, said, “The benchmark criteria for Singapore athletes to qualify for the SEA Games is the third placing in Southeast Asia. The SNOC Selection Committee took a slightly different approach today to be more extensive in the benchmark margin without compromising the standards of the contingent. As Singapore is hosting the SEA Games this year, we want to allow the athletes who look forward to fly the Singapore flag high in front of the home supporters.

“For example, those who medalled at the 2013 SEA Games are now given the opportunity to defend their medal. Athletes who have been training, competing and are not too far off the margin have also been selected. We hope they will be in good stead to do well on home turf.

“We are very encouraged by the large number of athletes who have been nominated, and that Singapore will be represented in all 36 sports and most of the events. Judging by the current figures, it is likely that we will be fielding the largest contingent to the SEA Games ever. We hope that Singaporeans will come out and support them to give a good fight on the playing field.”

*This number will change during the entry-by-name process where all NSAs will decide on the actual athletes representing the specific events before the deadline on 15 April 2015. If there are more athletes than entries in the event or if there is a cap on the total number of athletes per sport, the NSAs will adhere to their selection processes to select the athlete(s).
