West Zone B Div Basketball Championship Boon Lay Secondary vs Nan Hua High

Jurong West Sports Hall, Friday, January 23, 2015 — Nan Hua High defeated Boon Lay Secondary 59–44, earning their first win of the first round of the West Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

Nan Hua had previously went down 31–59 to Pioneer Secondary. This is Boon Lay’s first loss, having previously defeated Chestnut Drive Secondary 55–14.

Tneoh Yuan Ping (#9), Li Yongyi (#12), Cheah Yan (#13) combined for 44 points in Nan Hua’s win.

Boon Lay trailed early in the game, but a lacklustre Nan Hua defence allowed Boon Lay to keep the game close. Nan Hua held a slim two-point lead at the end of the opening quarter.

In the second quarter, Boon Lay continued keeping the game close through a concerted backcourt effort.

However, Nan Hua outscored Boon Lay 15–3 in the third quarter to bolster their lead to 20 points.

In the closing quarter, Boon Lay had several opportunities to attack the basket, but they could not convert several of their attempts. Despite outscoring Nan Hua 19–14 in the final frame, Nan Hua took advantage of the latter’s low field goal percentage to secure the 59–44 victory.

Nan Hua captain, Lee Hong Yang (#4), said, “We played harder in this game than we played against Pioneer. We were not so nervous today. I think our defence was very bad, because we were slow to rotate. Luckily, Boon Lay did not manage to capitalize on that.”

Nan Hua will next face Chestnut Drive at 12.30 p.m., while Boon Lay will play Zhenghua Secondary at 3 p.m. on Thursday, January 29. Both games will be played at Jurong West Sports Hall.
