Jurong West Sports Hall, Monday, January 19, 2015 — Nan Hua High (NHH) triumphed 15–12 over Jurong West Secondary (JWS) in the first round of the West Zone B Division Netball Championship.
NHH trailed throughout the whole game, only to snatch the lead in the last quarter and run away with the victory.
The first few minutes of opening quarter saw both teams fumble with the ball. JWS were the first to overcome their nervousness and played to their game plan. On the other hand, NHH continued to fumble and throw misplaced passes. JWS led 5–2 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, NHH found themselves under consistent pressure from JWS. JWS captain, Tan Jie Min (GD), stood out defensively as she worked well with her team to intercept passes in the centre third. However, nerves got the better of the shooters from both sides and caused both teams to waste scoring opportunities. JWS took a slim 8–5 lead at the end of the half.
The third quarter proved to be a tougher fight for JWS as many unforced errors crept in. NHH showed a greater control of the game which limited JWS’s chances, while they capitalized on their own. NHH stayed calm and composed to outscore JWS 5–3 in the quarter.
Trailing by a point, NHH were eager to make a comeback and thus, focused more on their defence. This forced JWS to make hesitant passes which were easily intercepted. The defenders from NHH continued to force JWS turnovers.
NHH’s Erica Woon (GA) stepped up offensively towards the end of the quarter to score crucial points for her team. She played a pivotal role for NHH with good runs in the shooting circle, getting past her defenders on several occasions to receive and convert her attempts. NHH made a strong run towards the end of the quarter and eventually beat JWSS 15–12 in their opening match of the season.
“We played well today,” said Tan Jie Min, captain of Jurong West. “However, we still need to work harder on our passes and bringing down of the ball,” she added.
