National Sailing Centre, Saturday-Sunday, November 1-2, 2014 — Father-son duo Siew Shaw Her (helm) and Sebastian Siew (crew) won the 420 category with a total of eight points over seven races at the 2014 National Sailing Centre (NSC) Cup Series 3.

ELisa Yukie Yokoyama (helm) and Samantha Annabelle Neubronner (crew) bagged the silver with 10 points. Loh Jia Yi (helm) and Matthew Scott Lau (crew) had to settle for bronze with 19 points.

At the NSC Cup Series 3, sailors raced in the Byte, Laser 4.7, Laser Radial, Laser Standard, 420 and Bic Techno (windsurfing) categories. They faced light winds ranging from six to eight knots over the two days of racing. There were a total of six races held for the Bic Techno category, and seven races for the other categories.

Since more than five races had been conducted for each category, every sailor was granted a discard. (A discard means sailors need not include the points for their worst race into their total points; only the points for their best six of seven races are added.)

Benedict Leong won the Byte category with 19 points. Andre Chew and Janis Ong both scored 34 points but Andre Chew won the silver due to his superior performance in the last race where he scored one point while Janis Ong had 10.

In the Bic Techno category, Mark Wee won five out of six races to finish in first place with five points. Reynold Chan and Alexander Lim finished in second and third place with nine and 16 points respectively.

Jevyn Ong narrowly clinched the gold medal in the Laser Radial category with 12 points. He was closely tailed by Bernie Chin, who garnered 15 points and had to settle for silver. Justin Chew claimed the bronze medal with 24 points.

“It feels good to win the regatta, because this is my last regatta in the Laser Radial as I am now moving on to a different class of boat. Finishing my Laser Radial career ranked 1st in the rankings and in my last regatta gives me confidence in my next class of boat,” said Jevyn Ong.

Unlike the Laser Radial category, the winner of the Laser Standard category did not have any close contenders. Mark Wong convincingly won all seven races and scored only six points. Hugo Minh came in second with 18 points, and Manfred Baudzus finished third with 19 points.

At the end of the NSC Cup Series 3, the scores for the regatta are added to the sailors’ scores from the NSC Cup Series 1 and 2 regattas. The total score, excluding the discards, is used to determine the winner of each category. The NSC Cup challenge trophy is awarded to the winner of each category, with the exception of the Bic Techno and Laser 4.7 category.

Danial Norman Tan won the Laser Radial challenge trophy with a total of 81 points. Jarold Chia won the Byte challenge trophy with 75 points. Mark Wong won the Laser Standard challenge trophy with 20 points. Savannah Siew and Kimberly Lim won the 420 challenge trophy with 55 points.
