Republic Polytechnic, Wednesday, November 12, 2014 — Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) handed Temasek Polytechnic (TP) their first loss of their Polytechnic-Institute of Technical Education (POL-ITE) Netball Championship season with a 53–41 victory.

NYP now hold a 2–2 win-loss record. TP had won all three of their earlier games.

Plagued by shooting woes throughout the game, TP also had to deal with an ankle injury to Goal Keeper Jolene Goh, which was sustained early in the opening quarter. Goh, however, returned to the game after a short while on the bench.

NYP never trailed in the game as they established the lead right from the start, taking a 14–9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, NYP outscored TP 15–9 to bolster their hold on the game, ending the half with an 11-point lead. NYP’s Goal Shooter Roxanne Low and Goal Attack Chan Hui Mui combined for only a single missed attempt throughout the entire quarter.

TP attempted to push the tempo of the game in the third quarter, which worked initially, sparking a 5–0 run. Undaunted, NYP adapted quickly and stuck to their pace of play, helping to maintain their lead. TP had multiple opportunities to reduce the deficit, but could not convert their attempts, as they trailed 33–41 at the end of the quarter.

Costly TP turnovers in the final quarter foiled any comeback attempt, allowing NYP to seal the 53–41 victory.

NYP captain Chan Hui Mui said, “This win is very exciting for us because we lost to them (TP) twice before – by four in the last POL-ITE and by two in this year’s IVP (Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic Games). This game is a morale boost for the whole team, and it’s great that our seniors are down here to support us. Having huge support from the school is also very important; we have transport to and fro school just to make sure we have enough rest for games.”

“This is one of the games where our defenders communicated a lot on court. Our defence hasn’t been great in the previous games, and sometimes we allow opponents to come in through the middle. Today, everybody stuck to the game plan, communicated with each other and pushed each other on,” added vice-captain Yeo Jia En.

NYP will next face ITE, while TP will face defending champions Ngee Ann Polytechnic in the closing games of the season. Both games will be played at 7.45 p.m. at Republic Polytechnic.
