National University of Singapore, Tuesday, September 10, 2014 — Nanyang Technological University (NTU) scraped through to record a 2–1 win over National University of Singapore (NUS) in the Singapore University Games (SUniG) Football Championship.

Chris Yip-Au Hew (#9) and Priscilla Tan (#18) scored a goal each to continue NTU’s winning streak in the tournament, sealing the game for the seven-time defending champions in the first half. NUS added a goal back in the game, as Teo Wee Shiuan (#10) came off the bench to score her side’s only goal.

Chris (#9) fired NTU into a first-half lead, as her long shot after a pool clearance by Ting Hui D’Cruz (#5) went past goalkeeper Alisa Lim (#88) and into the net.

NTU had more possession of the ball as winger Chan Yi Jun (#14) continually harassed her opposing full back. NUS conceded a few corners and free kicks outside their defensive area, and saw two NTU shots rattle the crossbar of their goalposts. A free kick won outside the NUS defensive area allowed NTU’s Priscilla Tan (#18) to volley the ball past the NUS keeper for the second goal.

The NUS defence struggled to get grips with the threat of NTU’s Nanna Vinholt Johnson (#13) and her tall frame. Sarah Long (NUS #8) put the ball into the bottom corner of the NTU goal from a good attacking play but it was ruled offside.

In the second half, NTU striker Chris (#9) dropped deep into midfield to launch balls down the flanks. NTU almost increased their lead but striker Nanna Vinholt Johnson (#13) was denied a one-on-one chance when she was brought down with a sliding tackle.

NUS mounted a comeback later in the game, when Teo Wee Shiuan (#10) made the most of a defensive error by the NTU centre backs to out-run them and slot the ball past NTU goalkeeper Beatrice Tan (#22).

NTU captain, Sharda Parvin, said, “We’ve played our best against a tough opponent. When NUS played a fast ball game, we had to keep up with it.”

NTU face SMU next, while NUS will play SIM. Both games will take place on Wednesday, September 17, at 7.30pm.
