PESEB, Wednesday, July 23, 2014 — Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) defeated Yuying Secondary (YY) 52–32 for their fourth win of the second round in the South Zone C Division Basketball Championship. ACS will proceed to the semi-finals, while for Yuying their season has come to an end.

Xin Kiat (#13) of Yuying was the top scorer with 15 points, while Lavin Raj (#7) of ACS led his team with 14 points.

The first quarter quickly saw Lavin (ACS #15) using his height advantage to block layup attempts and grab the rebound. Raphael Gui (ACS #6) quickly scored, and aggressive attacks by Ram (ACS #7) and Wallace Por (ACS #8) led to 11 unanswered points.

After stealing the ball multiple times but failing to convert, Xin Kiat (YY #13) finally made a layup to score Yuying’s first two points. A layup by Jevin Surjo (ACS #12) brought the score to 13–2, but Yuying rallied to find their way through the ACS defence to end the first quarter with eight points.

The start of the second quarter saw both sides at an impasse, as players quickly intercepted balls to prevent opponents from scoring. Jevin (ACS #12) successfully attempted a layup in the third minute, but Xin Kiat (YY #13) followed with a layup seconds after. Xin Kiat (#13) then scored four more points as he swiftly intercepted passes to drive the ball across the court and score.

After a timeout, ACS rallied to score six points. Yuying players repeatedly attempted to score, but found themselves blocked before they could come close to the net. The second quarter ended with ACS leading 21–14.

ACS pulled further ahead in the third quarter, converting opportunities at an even pace. Xin Kiat (#13) notably led Yuying’s charge, but found himself blocked whenever he attempted to drive the ball across the court. By the end of the third quarter, ACS were leading 34–20.

In the last quarter, both sides scored the most points but it was insufficient for Yuying to close the gap. Led by Lavin (#15) and Ram (#7), ACS scored 10 unanswered points even as Xin Kiat (YY #13) kept blocking layup attempts. Xin Kiat (YY #13) broke through the ACS defence in the fifth minute to score two points.

However, aggressive attempts from both sides mostly missed even as they chalked up points. A strong push from Wallace (YY #8) earned them two points in the last 20 seconds, but the game ended 52–32 in favour of ACS.

Ram Sunda (ACS #7) said, “I think we could have played a lot better because we did not get many of the rebounds. We hope to improve in our next game.”
