Delta Sports Hall, Monday, July 21, 2014 — Cedar Girls’ Secondary (CGS) romped to a 2–0 (25–10, 25–15) win over Ang Mo Kio Secondary (AMK) in the final of the South Zone C Division Girls Volleyball Championship.

Cedar Girls’ took control of the game in the first set, as they raced out to a 7–1 lead. Ang Mo Kio suffered early on as they struggled to keep the ball in play. Yeo Jing Yi (CGS #17) and Boh Zexuan (CGS #13) both did well to hit strong spikes, which elicited weak returns from Ang Mo Kio. This allowed Cedar Girls’ to build up a big lead at the first break.

Ang Mo Kio came back after that, scoring three straight points to keep their hopes of winning the set alive. Ng Ai Lun (AMK #15) played a key part in this, scoring two aces on her serve. Saw Lin Min (CGS #16) was able to break Ang Mo Kio’s momentum, hitting a tip spike which caught Ang Mo Kio off guard. Cedar Girls’ eventually took the first set 25–10.

In the second set, Ang Mo Kio took an early 2–1 lead after Jing Yi (CGS #17) sent an errant spike wide. Astrid Lee (CGS #12) showed great anticipation to push block an Ang Mo Kio spike back into their area, which gave Cedar Girls’ the lead. That gave enough motivation for Cedar Girls’ to fuel a 5–0 run, allowing them to lead 9–4.

Cedar Girls’ spiking game was unstoppable at this point, as their players were on point with most of them. Ang Mo Kio’s return game were letting them down, as poor sets made them unable to return an attack.

Despite this, Ang Mo Kio summoned the last of their resolve, scoring five straight points to cut the lead to eight points. Cedar Girls’ showed great composure, scoring the last three points in a row to seal the game.

Cedar Girls’ captain, Saw Lin Min (#16), said, “It was great to defend our title from last year. There were a lot of supporters on the other side, so we needed to stay calm and channel them out. We have to do our best and never give up at nationals. We want to thank our coaches, teachers and seniors who came down to support us. Overall, it was a great experience for the whole team.”
