PESEB, Thursday, July 17, 2014 — Kuo Chuan Presbyterian showed true grit to grind out a 42–37 win over Yuying Secondary in the second round of the South Zone C Division Boys Basketball Championship. Gildon (#13) led all scorers with 15 points, while YYS #13 scored 13 in a losing effort.

The win puts Kuo Chuan Presbyterian joint-fourth in the group with a 1–2 win–loss record. Yuying fall to a 2–1 win–loss record, they lie joint-second in the group alongside Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road).

The game started off at a slow pace, as both teams struggled to score. Yuying made the first basket when YYS #8 scored first on a underbasket. Eugene (KCP #8) broke his team’s scoring drought with a basket 3 minutes into the game. Yuying dominated most of the proceedings in the first period. However, they were profligate with their attempts at the rim. This allowed Kuo Chuan Presbyterian to stay close at the end of the period.

Yuying were more aggressive in the second period, which netted them a lot of free throws. Kuo Chuan Presbyterian struggled to score in the quarter, as Gildon (KCP #13) was the only player who got on the board. YYS #13 was the key player for his team, as his height and speed gave Kuo Chuan Presbyterian a lot of trouble.

The third period saw Kuo Chuan Presbyterian start their comeback. Gildon (KCP #13) combined well with Zhong Zhe (KCP #12), as both players showed good understanding between each other. Their good play was able to help Kuo Chuan Presbyterian chip at the lead that Yuying built up in the second quarter. Jun Wu (KCP #10) had a highlight play, racing back in time to swat away what was an open layup for a Yuying player.

Gildon (KCP #13) was the key player in the final quarter, as his scoring was what sealed the game for Kuo Chuan Presbyterian. After a fast break lay-up to tie the game up at 35, he netted a three-pointer which put the game away for good. YYS #12 had a pair of free throws to keep the game close, but he missed both of them. Kuo Chuan Presbyterian eventually won 42–37, sealing their first win of the second round

Kuo Chuan Presbyterian player, Gautham (#9), said, “We are very happy to have clinched our first win in the second round. Wee need to maintain our winning streak if we want to reach the semi-final.”
