Physical Education and Sports Education Branch, Wednesday, July 16, 2014 — Catholic High School (CHS) are through to the final of the South Zone C Division Boys Volleyball Championship after beating Zhonghua Secondary School (ZHS) 2–0 (25–12, 25–23).
Catholic High will face Fairfield Methodist School in the final, while Zhonghua Secondary School will meet Ang Mio Kio Secondary School in the third/fourth play-off.
Both Catholic High and Zhonghua appeared to be evenly-matched early into the first set, and the game tied at 4–4. Catholic High’s Wang Liang Bing (#1) and Clement Liang (#11) executed a dummy which brought their lead to 6–4, but Tilakk (ZHS #7)’s well-timed spiked equalised the score at 7–7.
Thereafter, a series of mistakes by Zhonghua allowed Catholic High to score 14 unanswered points to make it 21-7, and Catholic High went on to close out the set 25-12.
Both schools were tied 6–6 early into the second match. Despite Tilakk (ZHS #7)’s strong spikes, haphazard defence allowed Catholic High to score three unanswered points.
Catholic High looked to be winning midway through with a score of 19–12 but lost momentum thereafter. With Catholic High struggling with poor team coordination, Zhonghua took the opportunity to score seven points to bring the score to 22–19.
Following a time-out, Zhonghua came back to the game more focused and started chasing the points. A spike by Catholic High which went out of court narrowed the score to 24–23, but Catholic High went on to win the set 25–23.
Catholic High captain Clive Ling (#13) said, “We did better this game and covered the empty areas, but we rushed too much in the second set and need to slow down.”
