Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, July 14, 2014 — River Valley High School (RVHS) beat Yuan Ching Secondary (YCS) 56–20 in the West Zone C Division Boys Basketball Championship.

Both teams did not qualify for the second round of the tournament.

Chua Shi Rong (RVHS #11) led his team with a game-high 19 points, while Yuan Ching’s (#5) had eight points.

Both teams appeared to be evenly-matched early into the game. Midway through the first quarter, the scores were level at 6–5. However, River Valley High then went on a scoring outburst, putting in 10 points straight to push their lead to 16–5.

Led by Chua Shi Rong (#11) and Ng Yi Da (#14), River Valley High put up a strong second quarter both offensively and defensively. River Valley High relied on good team chemistry to connect well on plays, then taking turns to score. Although Yuan Ching were trying hard to get past River Valley High’s defence, they were unable to and had to settle for flustered shots which did not fall. River Valley High managed to keep Yuan Ching scoreless in the second quarter to lead 32–5 going into the halftime break.

Leonard Sim (RVHS #12) converted on a layup to put in the first two points in the third quarter. Three minutes into the quarter, Yuan Ching were trailing 5–36 when (YC #7) scored a free throw to put a stop to his side’s scoring drought (6–36). Yuan Ching’s (#9) then converted one on the key to make it 8–36. Yuan Ching were more focused this quarter and outscored River Valley High 9–6 to trail 14–38 at the end of the quarter.

In the final quarter, River Valley High continued to dominate the game with Shi Rong (#11) and Yi Da (#14) taking turns to score. They contributed eight points each in the final quarter. Towards the end of the game, River Valley High were intercepting passes one after another in their offensive half to go straight for the basket, thus scoring easy points through that. River Valley High went on to take the game 56–20.

River Valley High captain, Kah Leong (#9), said, “It was a good game today and I think we did our fast breaks well. We hope to get into the top four next year.”
