Anglican High School, Friday, July 4, 2014 — Bedok Green Secondary (BG) defeated Siglap Secondary (SSS) 51–16 in the East Zone C Division Boys Basketball Championship.

Bedok Green registered their second straight win of the tournament and will meet St. Patrick’s School next. With this loss, Siglap currently hold a 1–2 win-loss record and will face Manjusri Secondary in their final group game.

Chan Teng Hong (BG #12) led his team with a game-high 14 points, while Erfan Syazherwan (SSS #8) had six points.

Two minutes into the game, Siglap’s Erfan Syazherwan (#8) converted a free throw to open the scoring (1–0). On the next transition, Danial (BG #15) drove to the basket to score an easy two. Bedok Green were struggling with their bad finishing this quarter but defensively, they were putting up a diligent defence to make it difficult for Siglap to pass the ball around. Bedok Green trailed 6–7 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Chan Teng Hong (BG #12) finished strong against his defender to take the lead from Siglap (8–7). Bedok Green’s Teng Hong (#12) and Chin Long (#13) secured most of the offensive rebounds to give the team second chance points, allowing them to gradually pull away. Teng Hong was also enjoying a good defensive game, as he was consistently stealing balls and going for interceptions to trigger fast breaks for his team. Bedok Green then took a 25–11 lead going into the halftime break.

Bedok Green continued to squander their scoring opportunities early in the third quarter due to bad finishing, but came back into the game stronger after that to threaten Siglap’s defence time and time again. Bedok Green scored 14 unanswered points this quarter to push their lead to 39–11.

Teng Hong (BG #12) continued to put up an impressive performance in the final quarter with his well-rounded game. Offensively he was dishing out well-placed passes, while defensively he was going for steals one after another. Although Siglap managed to break out of their scoring drought through Yeo Wen Bin (#14) and Ivan Kok (#10), it was not enough to reduce the deficit significantly. Bedok Green went on to take the game 51–16.

Bedok Green captain, Teng Hong (#12), said, “I think it was a very good game. We had a lot of interceptions but I think we could improve on our defence and layups.”
