Anglican High School, Friday, July 4, 2014 — Dunman Secondary (DMN) dominated Changkat Changi Secondary (CCS) to win 58–6 in the East Zone C Division Boys Basketball Championship.

Dunman registered their second straight win of the tournament and will meet Tanjong Katong Secondary next. With this loss, Changkat Changi currently hold a 0–3 win-loss record and will face Temasek Junior College in their final group game.

Koh Jun Hao (DMN #10) led his team with a game-high 16 points.

From the start of the game, Changkat Changi were limited by Dunman’s active defence and thus struggled to find their spot in the paint. Javier (CCS #5) was controlling his team’s offensive pace, trying to find his open teammates during the game but failed to do so, as Dunman intercepted Changkat Changi’s passes easily to go for fast breaks. Dunman’s Koh Jun Hao (#10) was especially accurate with his shots, registering a total of three 3-pointers in this quarter alone. With that, Dunman recorded an impressive 23–0 scoring run to end off the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Rainer (CCS #6) was trying hard to pull down rebounds to create chances for the team. His efforts were rewarded three minutes into the quarter, when Javier (CCS #5) found an open Justin (CCS #10) in the paint who went up for an easy two (2–24). Shortly after, Rainer (CCS #6) drove his way into the paint and drew a foul from his defender. He netted his first free throw to make it 3–24. Towards the end of the quarter, Dunman made many interceptions to go for fast breaks, scoring easy points to make it 32–3 going into the halftime break.

Early into the third quarter, Dunman had a couple of mis-passes and thus missed out on several scoring opportunities. However, defensively they managed to stop Changkat Changi’s offensive plays easily and as such, their opponents were unable to find a breakthrough and faced another scoring drought. Dunman registered a 7–0 scoring run in the quarter to take a 39–3 lead.

Dunman stepped up on their defence in the final quarter, stealing several balls to go straight for the basket. Changkat Changi faced great pressure from Dunman’s defence and thus their offensive plays did not gel. With one minute remaining, Javier (CCS #5) netted a three on the wing to make a mark on the scoresheet (6–54). Following that, Dunman made two more shots to win the game 58–6.

Dunman’s top-scorer, Jun Hao (#10), said, “We did poorly and didn’t do our fast breaks properly. Then we also had a lot of turnovers. I guess our defence were also not done up to expectations. We have to improve most on our defence, cause we came back for defence kind of slowly. Also, we have to improve on our fast breaks as we always tend to lose the ball.”
