Anglican High School, Friday, July 4, 2014 — Loyang Secondary (LYS) defeated St. Patrick’s School (SPS) 56–12 in the East Zone C Division Boys Basketball Championship.

With this win, Loyang currently hold a 2–1 win-loss record and will meet Bedok Green Secondary in their final group game. On the other hand, St. Patrick’s have registered their second loss of the tournament, and will play against Bedok Green Secondary next.

Jovan (LYS #12) led his team with a game-high 20 points, while Tristan David (SPS #9) had 10 points in the game.

From the start of the game, Loyang were capitalizing on fast breaks to gain easy points, adding consistently to the scoreboard. On the other hand, Tristan David (SPS #9) drove all the way to the basket to score the first two points for St. Patrick’s. Then on, St. Patrick’s tried feeding Tristan (#9) for easy underbasket shots but struggled to find him with the ball as they were limited by Loyang’s defence. Loyang had a good 16–4 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Although Loyang were playing the game without the presence of their coach in the first half, they overcame that by communicating actively on the court. Those on the bench were also constantly directing their teammates who were playing. Loyang continued to dominate in the second quarter with each of their players dishing out good passes to their open teammates during the game, then finishing off well at the basket. Loyang managed to cut off St. Patrick’s attacks entirely this quarter and led 28–4 going into the halftime break.

Two minutes into the third quarter, Tristan (SPS #9) netted an open shot to break his side’s scoring drought (6–28). Loyang managed to cause many turnovers in the second half with a well-coordinated defence, then scoring through them to double their lead by the end of the third quarter (48–8). Loyang’s Jovan (#12) played a well-rounded game in the second half and contributed a total of 12 points in the third and fourth quarters combined, while St. Patricks were scoring only through Tristan (#9). Loyang managed to end the game 56–12 winners.

Loyang captain, Jovan (#12), said, “It was fun and I think it was quite an experience to be expose to games like these. I think we can improve more on our defence, set up, fast breaks and shooting.”
