PESEB, Wednesday, July 2, 2014 — Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary (KCP) romped to a 79–16 win over Balestier Hill Secondary (BHS) in the first round of the South Zone C Division Basketball Championship. Gildon (KCP #13) led all scorers with 34 points, while BHS #14 scored 10 points to led his team.
The win is KCP’s first of the season, placing them second in Group F with a 1–0 win-loss record. BHS have a 0–2 win-loss record. They were beaten by Queensway Secondary 10–53 in their first match.
BHS scored the first basket of the game, but that would be their only successful shot of the quarter. KCP then reeled off a 16–0 run for the rest of the quarter. Tat Zhang (KCP #15) did well on defence for KCP, showing good instincts to generate some steals. KCP’s dominance continued in the second quarter, as they put up an identical 16–2 margin to lead by 28 points at the half.
The second half saw KCP increase their intensity on defence. However, this slowly wore down the KCP players. They then let in a couple of easy baskets for BHS, which explained the increase in scoring. Gildon was absolutely on fire for KCP in the fourth quarter, pouring in 16 points in the period. KCP took advantage of a shallow BHS bench to explode for 29 points in the final frame. They eventually ended the game 79–16 victors. They will next face St. Andrew’s Secondary on Friday, July 4 at 11:10 am at PESEB.
KCP captain, Eugene (#8), said, “Feels good to win but we need to concentrate on our next game against St. Andrew’s. We have to improve our finishing if we want to meet our goal of reaching the nationals.”
KCP vice-captain, Hyqal (#7), added, “We have a bigger advantage because of our size and that’s what we need to focus on.”
