PESEB, Wednesday, July 2, 2014 — Whitley Secondary (WSS) took out Bartley Secondary 56–20 in the first round of the South Zone C Division Basketball Championship. Kenneth Ang (WSS #15) led all scorers with 25 points.
The win puts WSS at the top of Group E with a 2–0 win-loss record. They beat Bishan Park Secondary in their first match 32–18. Bartley Secondary now have a 0–2 win-loss record. They lost to Yuying Secondary 12–79 in their first match.
The first half saw WSS dominate BSS completely on both ends. Their full court press made it hard for BSS to advance the ball past their own half. Kenneth Ang (WSS #15) grabbed a lot of steals after pressuring the BSS ball handlers. He was able to take the ball down the court to score open lay ups after that.
WSS were so dominant that they could afford to send in their bench players by the second half. This led to a closer margin in both the third and fourth quarters. Nevertheless, WSS were able to seal the 56–20 win. They will take on Yuying Secondary next on Friday, July 4, at 12:20 pm at PESEB.
Whitley captain, Chang Zi Jie (#10), said, “It was okay. We played terribly, so it feels like an empty win. I think we need to improve our shooting and stamina. For now, we hope to make the second round, then make top 4 and get into nationals.”
