PESEB, July 2, Wednesday, 2014 — Fairfield Methodist School (Secondary) (FMS) recorded a 74–15 win over Anglo-Chinese School (International) [ACS(INT)] in the first round of the South Zone C Division Boys Basketball Championship.
FMS are now top of Group A with a 2–0 win-loss record, while ACS(INT) hold a 0–2 win-loss record.
FMS’s line-up had a distinct size advantage over ACS(INT) and it showed throughout the game. FMS blanked ACS(INT) in the first half, scoring 29 unanswered points. FMS were aided by the effective play of Xavier Ng (#13). He was a key factor on both ends of the court, using his height to score and defend when needed. ACS(INT) tried to move the ball around on the perimeter, but were unable to penetrate into the paint.
ACS(INT) finally got their break in the second half, when ACS(INT) #8 scored their first basket after two minutes in the third quarter. Despite this, FMS continued their smothering defence, not letting any easy shots get by them. Their full court press forced a lot of errant passes from the ACS(INT) players, which allowed FMS to extend the lead.
FMS eventually closed out the game with a 74–15 win, showing their determination to defend their C Division crown. They will next face Queenstown Secondary on Tuesday, July 8, at 1:30 p.m. at PESEB.
Fairfield captain, Denzel Tan (#5), said, “God help us to win and we played as a team. We need to work on our defence better. We also need to swing the ball and cut more. We aim to be champions this season.”
