OCBC Arena, Thursday, June 19, 2014 — Hosts Singapore (SIN) romped to an 8–0 win over Malaysia (MAS) in their opening match of the World University Floorball Championship (WUFC). Wynne Tang (SIN #10) and Laura Tan (SIN #37) led all scorers with two goals apiece. Four other Singaporean players tied with one goal apiece.

For Singapore, the bulk of the players comprises of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) undergraduates, with the rest from National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore Institute of Management (SIM), Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) and Edith Cowan University (SMF Institute of Higher Learning). Leading the team is Captain Heng Hui-Shan (SIN #91) and head coach, Jaime Cheong.

With the win, Singapore now lie second in Group B behind Japan by virtue of goal difference. Both countries will face each other in the final match of the group stage. Meanwhile, this is the second loss for Malaysia, after previously going down to Japan 0–16.

Singapore started the game out conservatively. They worked the ball around their players methodically, slowly building up play. Wynne Tang (SIN #10) found the net for Singapore after three minutes. Her shot trickled past the helpless Izzah Syafiqah (MAS #1), after a nice assist from the right wing by Natalia Clare Wee (SIN #19). The goal put Malaysia on the back foot, which led them to scrambling around on defence. Siti Nur’aini (SIN #24) and captain Heng Hui-Shan (SIN #91) both added goals to put Singapore up by three at the end of the first period.

Malaysia found a bit more success venturing into the Singapore half in the second period. However, the solid Singapore defence were able to shut them down each time. Wynne Tang (SIN #10) turned provider for Natalia Wee (SIN #19) in this period, assisting Natalia’s goal that went in after a goalmouth scramble. Suhaidah (SIN #31) then scored shortly after the restart, drilling a hard shot past the keeper from the middle of the court. Towards the end of the period, Laura Tan (SIN #37) got onto the score sheet as well. She was able to poach in and score after a shot rebounded off Izzah Syafiqah (MAS #1).

After keeping a clean sheet for Singapore in the first two periods, Fariza Begum (SIN #99) was replaced by Evangeline Poon (SIN #5) in goal. Evangeline did well throughout the final period to completely shut out Malaysia. Wynne Tang (SIN #10) scored her second goal in the period. A nice pass from the left wing found Wynne (SIN #10) on the right side of the goal with an easy tap-in to score. Malaysia had a coupled of good chances, but they were unable to create any shot attempts in the Singapore half. Laura Tan (SIN #37) wrapped the game up for Singapore by scoring her second goal, giving the team the 8–0 win.

Joint top-scorer, Wynne Tang (SIN #10), said, “Our team is really happy that we started our campaign with a win, so we are looking for to better things to come. We are taking things one step at at a time. Right now, we are looking forward to our next game against Japan, that will end the group stage and we hope to top the group. From there, we will see how it goes. I think the teams in the other group are all really strong teams and it will be a challenge to play any of them.”

Singapore will next face Japan on Friday, June 20, 2014 at 2pm in their final group game.
