Jurong East Sports Centre, Wednesday, June 18, 2014 — During the ActiveSG badminton camp, 10 children aged 6 to 12 got the opportunity to pick up basic badminton techniques during the June school holidays.

ActiveSG is one of the recommendations of Vision 2030, an initiative that aims to provide affordable programmes for Singaporeans of all ages and levels.

The camp is managed a convener from Sport Singapore and instructed by coaches from Proserve Badminton Centre, a local badminton service provider.

“It’s always good to have programmes like that to get the children to be aware and start playing sports at a young age,” said Robert Han, who heads Proserve Badminton Centre. “The ActiveSG programme allows the children to come here and enjoy playing the sport together with the people around you, and at the same time stay active.”

The 56-year-old added, “On a very broad basis, it’s good for parents to encourage their children to pick up sports at a young age. It doesn’t have to be badminton, as long as it involves a form of workout. Children should learn how to keep fit and stay healthy from young, and I think this is very important.”

The three-day badminton camp was structured to cater to beginners. During the duration of the camp, participants were taught to properly grip the racket. Participants were also taught the different service and return techniques.

Khor Sui San said, “I wanted my children to pick up badminton and I was looking for a structured and proper programme for them.” The 44-year-old mother registered her eleven-year-old daughter, Ng Hui Ru, and six-year-old son, Ng Chern Yi, for the camp.

“I hope that they can pick up the technical aspects of the game, such as footwork. And of course, I hope that they can grow to become more disciplined,” added Khor.
