Bukit Gombak Sports Centre, Monday, June 16, 2014 — Children aged 7 to 16 got the chance to dance to their favourite K-pop tunes at a four-session KpopX Fitness holiday programme.

The programme is part of the ActiveSG initiative that was recently rolled out by Sport Singapore. ActiveSG is one of the recommendations of Vision 2030, an initiative that aims to provide affordable programmes for Singaporeans of all ages and levels.

KpopX Fitness is a new studio fitness cardio workout that allows participants to groove to their favourite K-pop tunes. The workout combines simple K-pop dance moves with aerobic and body toning exercises. The programme is managed by a convener from Sport Singapore, and instructed by a certified dance instructor from Danz Fitness.

“I think it’s a very good programme to initiate people into taking up sports and keep themselves healthy and fit,” said Stephanie Tan, KpopX Fitness instructor at Danz Fitness. “Food in Singapore is quite unhealthy, but we Singaporeans love eating them. So having these programmes will help encourage people to take up sports and keep fit, while still eating the food they love.”

The 26-year-old added, “For kids, it’s good to let them take up activities like that from a young age, so when they grow up, this can become a habit for them and they can keep a good balanced lifestyle.”

The programme was structured to include simple dance steps and motions for younger children to comprehend and execute. The programme was held once weekly, over a period of four weeks. Each session lasted an hour.

Arina Abass said, “I wanted to encourage her to have a healthy lifestyle.” The 50-year-old mother registered her twelve-year-old daughter, Sri Shaista Adam, for the camp. “She does not have much physical education in school, because she is attending an Islamic institution. So for a start, I want her to try out and see whether she is able to cope with and enjoy the programme.”

Arina is also looking to sign herself and her daughter up for other similar studio fitness programmes like Zumba and Masala Bhangra.

“I’m enjoying myself here and I find the whole programme very interesting,” said twelve-year-old Sri.
