Kovan Sports Centre, Sunday, June 1, 2014 — A group of mothers took a break away from their maternal duties and teamed up to compete in this year’s edition of the 5-a-side Women’s Football at the Community Games.

Representing Kolam Ayer Community Sports Club (CSC), the team of mothers call themselves “Mummies United”. The team meets once weekly to play together at the street-soccer court at Koyam Ayer Community Centre.

“I feel more tired when I’m playing now, because of a lack of exercise. But I still can go on, because it’s fun,” said Muhaini Ahmad. Muhaini has been playing football since her teenage years.

“It’s a form of exercise for us. Now that we all have our own families, when we see our children playing, our legs become itchy, and we want to play with them. Most of the time, we play together with our own children,” added the 48-year-old.

Saadiah Ibramsah said, “Although we are in our forties, we still have the stamina and energy to go for it.” The 47-year-old only started playing football five years ago because of the influence from her friends and two sons.

The group of mothers got to know each other through volunteering for the activities at Kolam Ayer Community Centre, and have since become good friends, due to their shared passion for the sport. “All of us are like a family here. So it’s no longer about just one of us,” said Saadiah.

Mummies United finished the 5-a-side Women’s Football Games as first runners-up of the Central District.
