Republic Polytechnic, Friday, May 16, 2014 — Meridian Junior College (MJC) continued their winning streak by defeating Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) 3–2 in the group stage of the National A Division Girls Floorball Championship.

This was the third straight win for MJC while HCI suffered their first defeat after two wins and a draw. Both teams are still in with a chance of qualifying for the semi-finals.

The defending champions had more possession but the defensive HCI side prevented them from finding the back of the net. Any MJC shots that got through were brilliantly saved by the HCI keeper, Jio Hui Zhen (HCI #13), keeping the score 0–0 after the first period.

MJC’s persistent efforts eventually saw them take the lead through vice-captain, Jocelyn Lee (MJC #7). They then extended their lead through Adeena Bte Mohamed Nagib (MJC #33) with a wrap around goal to give MJC a 2–0 lead heading into the third period.

In the last period, an incorrect substitute resulted in one of the MJC players getting a 2-minute penalty. HCI managed to capitalize on their power-play advantage to narrow the deficit to one goal.

However, MJC responded almost instantaneously with a goal from captain, Mindy Lim (#6), who scored a goal seconds after the face-off.

A momentary lapse saw an MJC own goal to give HCI hope of a comeback. The high morale on the HCI bench to find the equalizing goal resulted in an intense last few minutes of the game but MJC managed to hold on to their 3–2 lead despite their nervy finish.

Jocelyn Lee (MJC #7) of MJC commented, “I think we did not play to our potential for this match. We found most of our shots were off target and we can definitely improve on that.”

HCI captain, Judith Lim (HCI #9), felt that her team defended well against the defending champions. “It was a very intense match but the team held well against MJC. The team spirit definitely played an important role during the match.”

MJC will next play Raffles Institution on Tuesday, May 20, while HCI will play their fifth and final match in the group stage against Victoria Junior College (VJC) on Wednesday, May 21.
