Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, April 30, 2014 — Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) beat Millennia Institute (MI) 71–15 in Round 2 of the National A Division Girls Basketball Championship.

Chan Chu Yin (#6) of HCI scored a game-high 16 points, while Aryssa Jumadin (#14) of MI registered a team-high six points.

In the first quarter, HCI put up a solid defence which prevented MI from cutting in. MI were only able to break through their defence once, when Iffah Ahmad (MI #9) stole the rebound to score on a layup. After which, HCI managed to shut out MI, scoring during set plays to register a 6–0 scoring run. HCI led 12–4 by the end of the first quarter.

During the second quarter, HCI played with well-executed offensive plays. They rotated the ball fluidly on the perimeter, then found their unguarded teammates in the paint with well-placed passes to finish at the basket. HCI poured in a total of 20 points to pull away from MI by the end of the first half (32–7).

MI stepped up offensively in the third quarter, with Aryssa (MI #14) putting in four points for her team. She was the only scorer for her team this quarter. Aryssa (MI #14) also fought against HCI’s dominance with good defensive efforts.

In the final quarter, HCI executed good offensive plays and coupled with good fast breaks, they went on a 21–0 run to end off the match 71–15.

With this win, HCI currently hold a 3–0 win-loss record for the second round and will go on to face NYJC. On the other hand, MI currently have a 0–3 win-loss record and will be up against NJC next.

HCI vice-captain, Freda Chua (#7), said, “We worked on our defence and did a good job on fast breaks. Our centres did a good job in getting rebounds.”

MI captain, Aryssa (#14), said, “Compared to the other games, today’s match we put up our best performance. Everyone was brave to attack and our team spirit was always high.”
