Republic Polytechnic, Monday, April 28, 2014 — St. Andrew’s Junior College (SAJC) took a step closer to qualifying for the second round with a 55–29 win over Temasek Junior College (TJC) in the National A Division Netball Championship.

Good defensive work by SAJC in the first quarter allowed them to take a comfortable eight-point lead. The SAJC defenders were able to prevent TJC from making entry passes into the final attacking third. With their supply route cut off, TJC’s opportunities at score were few and far between.

The start of the second quarter saw SAJC dominating possession. Their Goal Shooter was shooting the ball well, making most of her attempts. She also linked up well with her Goal Attack, running into open space each time to create easy shots. Towards the end, TJC started to slow their game down. This proved to work as they were able to score enough points to win the quarter by two.

It was a shaky start to the third quarter for SAJC, as they turned the ball over on four consecutive possessions. TJC showed good anticipation on those passes to intercept them. Overall, it was a better defensive effort for TJC as compared to the first half. That changed midway through the quarter, as something seemed to click for SAJC. The team seemed more steady and composed. They were able to reel off a 7–1 run to end the quarter.

The final quarter saw SAJC score freely, as their Goal Shooter and Goal Attack again linked up well in the final third. The TJC GK and GD could be seen frantically running around in an attempt to stop them, but to no avail. SAJC were able to build a 26–point lead, eventually winning the game 55–29.

SAJC captain, Joie, said, “I think we played much better today skill-wise. TJC is a more challenging opponent, but we were able to still win by a decent margin. For sure, our aim this year is not just the top four. We are hoping to at least make the finals.”

SAJC vice-captain, Vanes, added, “TJC gave us a good fight today, but I am glad we were still able to win.”
