Singapore Sports School, Wednesday, April 23, 2014 — Raffles Girls’ School set a new meet record in the Girls’ C Division 4×50 metres medley relay with a time of 2 minutes 2.05 seconds at the 55th National Schools Swimming Championships.

The quartet of Hannah Quek, Kathlyn Laiu, Daphne Tan and Cherlyn Yeoh beat their 2 minute 04.27 seconds effort that they set in the preliminaries.

Methodist Girls’ School came in a close second with a time of 2:02.22, which also beat the previous record, while Singapore Sports School rounded up the podium with a 2:07.22 effort.

MGS’ Tan Jing-E got her school off to a flying start with a 30.39s backstroke leg, which bettered Shana Lim’s 2006 national under-14 mark of 30.60s. RGS countered with a 34.16s-breaststroke swim by Kathlyn, which was nearly two seconds quicker than what MGS’ Chan Zi Yi could do.

Quah Jing Wen dragged MGS back into contention by out-swimming Daphne 28.32s-29.31s in the butterfly, and while Natasha Ong was quicker than her RGS counterpart Cherlyn on the freestyle leg, the latter and her team were collectively 0.17 seconds faster than MGS.

Hannah of RGS said, “It was really unexpected. MGS were really xiong (fierce). They were really close until the end, but we were really glad to have won.”

Her teammate Cherlyn added, “I think it was pretty unexpected that we won. We are more bonded together as a team after this win.”
