Singapore Sports School, Wednesday, April 23, 2014 — Christopher Cheong of Temasek Junior College swam a time of 1 minute 3.64 seconds to clinch gold in the A Division 100 metres breaststroke at the 55th National Schools Swimming Championships.

Alexander Tseng and Edmund Teo of Raffles Institution rounded up the podium. Alexander finished over three seconds behind Christopher to take second place, while Edmund clocked a time of 1 minute 08.05 seconds to finish third.

Christopher, who was Singapore’s sole male breaststroke swimmer at last December’s Southeast Asian Games, smashed his personal best of 1:04.45 clocked last month. He supplanted Ng Jia Hao (1:04.14) to take third place on Singapore’s all-time list, and now only trails Parker Lam (1:02.65) and Lionel Khoo (1:02.79). Both Parker and Lionel hold the nine fastest 100m breaststroke times, and the latter still holds the meet record of 1:03.37 which he set back in 2012.

Christopher said, “I was thinking to myself that I wanted to go under the 1:04 barrier ever since last year. So when I finally touched the wall, I was really happy about it. I felt I had a really good turn on the second lap and I had the energy to go all out. I was very excited and I guess the adrenaline helped me too. The timing gives me a lot of motivation to keep going. Hopefully I can keep improving on my timings and break the record in future meets.”
