Singapore Sports School, Tuesday, April 22, 2014 — Michael Yong of Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) took first place in the C Division Boys 200m freestyle at the 55th National Schools Swimming Championships. Michael’s winning time of 2 minutes and 0.62 seconds ensured his second straight victory after also claiming gold in 2013.

The meet record is held by Sng Ju Wei, then of ACS(I). He clocked a time of 1 minute 57.61 seconds in 1994 to set the current mark.

Rounding up the podium were Maximillian Ang of Singapore Sports School and Timothy Tan of Raffles Institution. Maximillian clocked 2 minutes 4.00 seconds to finish second, while Timothy finished close behind in third in a time of 2:04.91.

Michael of ACS(I) said, “I feel okay. My aim was to win a medal for my school and maintain my position. I did not race according to my expectations. I want to thank my coach and my dad, who encouraged me throughout the race, and a few of my friends as they helped to motivate me.”

The swimmer, who turns 14 on April 30, has a 200m freestyle PB of 1:58.75 clocked at last month’s Singapore National Age Group Championships. At the same meet, Michael set a national under-14 record in the 1500m freestyle.
