Republic Polytechnic, Tuesday, April 22, 2014 — Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) (ACS(I)) overcame a shaky start to beat Tampines Junior College (TPJC) 36–23 in the National A Division Netball Championship.

In the first two quarters, ACS employed short and accurate passes, enabling smooth transition offenses. ACS’s Goal Defender and Centre worked well together, making good passes down the court. On the other hand, TPJC used long overhead lobs to pace their attacks. ACS’s fluid passes gave them the offensive advantage and they led 17–7 by halftime.

In the second half, TPJC continued with their poor defensive display as seen from the first two quarters, leaving ACS’s Goal Attack and Centre unguarded most of the time. ACS exploited this loophole to extend their scoring lead. Defensively, ACS also managed to intercept several passes.

TPJC attempted to mirror the swift attacking plays exemplified by ACS and with that they managed to step up their game in the second half. They went from a seven-point effort in the first half, to register a sixteen-point offensive game in the second. However, despite TPJC’s valiant efforts to reduce the deficit, they came back into their game too late as ACS were too far ahead of them. ACS eventually beat TPJC 36–23 in their opening match of the season.

Captain of ACS, Man Yun, commented, “I am happy that we managed to improve from our mistakes and improved though defense could have been tighter. We could have maintained more control and composure.”

Vice-captain of ACS, Xin Yi, added, “I think the first quarter was well controlled though (our lines) it became quite messy midway through the game. The shooters failed to make accurrate shots but overall, I think that we fought hard to achieve this win.”
