A Div 1500m (Boys): Shohib wins in 4:18.60 to lead RI podium sweep

Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Wednesday, April 16, 2014 — Shohib Bin Abdul Wahab Marican led a podium sweep for Raffles Institution (RI) when he won the A Division 1500m final in a time of 4 minutes 18.60 seconds at the 55th National Inter-School Track and Field Championships.

Heng Yu Jie was just 0.16s behind Shohib in second place, while Joshua Nga placed third in 4:25.19.

The A Division 1500m hand-timed record of 4:00.3 was set in 1988 by A. Saravanan, an Ang Mo Kio Secondary alumnus, while the electronically-timed mark is 4:06.40 and was set by Nigel Foo, then of Anglo-Chinese Junior College, in 1995.

Right from the start, the three RI runners sprinted and broke away as they comfortably established a lead of almost 10 metres from the rest of the field. Joshua was dropped and the competition came down to Shohib and Yu Jie.

Shohib, who beat Yu Jie to second place at the National Schools Cross Country championships in March, came up tops again in the 1500m. He completed a treble of victories, having also won the 5000m on April 9.

Shohib said, “It feels good winning especially when we are all in the top three.”

Yu Jie and Joshua, who were both teammates in Catholic High School, also acknowledged their coaches, saying, “We would like to thank Mr Steven, Mr Tay and Mr Vincent for their efforts.”
