Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, April 14, 2014 — North Vista Secondary (NV) booked its place in the top four with a 64–42 win over Raffles Institution (RI) in the National B Division Boys Basketball Championship.

Chean Shao Jie (RI #6) led all scorers with 26 points, while Dorjee (NV #4) and Sim Xuan (NV #9) led North Vista to the win by scoring 13 points apiece.

This is the first time in two years that North Vista is appearing in the B Division national semi-final. North Vista are now joint-top of Group B along with Dunman Secondary. Both teams have a 2–0 win–loss record and both have qualified for the national semi-final.

The first quarter was a scoring battle between the key players of both teams, Shao Jie (#6) for Raffles and Dorjee (#4) for North Vista. Both players matched each other basket for basket at one point. Shao Jie (RI #6) totaled seven points in the quarter, while Dorjee topped that total by scoring eight.

North Vista looked more dominant in the second quarter, putting Raffles on the back foot. Their players seemed to run rings around the Raffles defence and get open looks. However, Raffles were able to hang close through the efforts of Shao Jie (RI #6), who poured in another eight points. He was the only player to score for Raffles in the period.

Raffles looked stronger on defence in the third quarter, closing out on North Vista’s perimeter players each time. However, North Vista were able to punish them in the post. Shiek Ridwan (NV #10) scored six straight points for his team through that strategy.

The final quarter saw North Vista seal the game with steady and smart play. Raffles took several gambles, making risky passes. This backfired for them, as North Vista would intercept them for turnovers. North Vista were able to hold on down the stretch for the 64–42 win, sealing their semi-final berth.

North Vista captain, Dorjee (#4), said, “I think we played well on the inside today, but we did not make as much threes as we did in the previous game. It feels good to enter the top four, it has been two years since we made it. We have gone through a lot of trials to get here.”
