Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, March 9, 2014 — Unity Secondary School posted its first win in the second round of the National B Division Boys Basketball Championship with a 71–50 win over Anglican High School. The game was close for the first three quarters, but Unity broke away in the final quarter.

Thng Yong-An (Unity #5) led all scorers with 36 points, while Shawn Toh (AHS #6) paced his team with 20 points.

The win puts Unity joint-top of Group A along with Presbyterian High. Both teams have identical 1–0 win–loss records.

Unity scored eight unanswered points to open the first quarter. Yong-An (Unity #5) and Jacinth Figueroa (Unity #7) both splashed three-pointers in that run. Yong-An (Unity #5) totaled three three-pointers in the period. Anglican High were unable to find their footing offensively. They missed their first couple of jumpers before Al Khalifa (AHS #14) tipped in to break their scoring duck.

Shawn Toh (AHS #6) stood out for Anglican High in the second half, he scored 10 points in the period. Shawn’s contributions helped Anglican to trim the deficit to four points at the half-time break.

The second half saw some physical play from both sides. Lai Hao Qian (AHS #5) drew a technical foul in the third quarter for holding on to John Christopher (Unity #6). The game was extremely tight between both teams. Anglican managed to tie the game at 41 apiece, but Unity went on a 6–0 run to end the quarter.

Unity ran away with the game in the final quarter, catching Anglican High completely off guard to post a 14–3 run. The lead was substantial enough such that Anglican High were unable to mount a comeback. Unity ended up 71–50 winners. They will next play Presbyterian High on Thursday, April 10 at Clementi Sports Hall at 4pm. Anglican High take on Bukit Panjang Government High at the same time on the adjacent court.

Unity captain, Foo Jun Lin (#10), said, “It was a tough game today, we lost out in the second quarter. They were a little rough today, so we wanted to go all out in the fourth quarter to prove them wrong. Presbyterian High is one of the biggest threats in our group.”

Anglican captain, Shawn Toh (#6), said, “Our defence was terrible in this game. We also did not make our open shots, as they cost us the game. We were not prepared at the start of the fourth quarter, this allowed Unity to run away with the run. We have to look out for Presbyterian High, as they are the biggest threat in the group.”
