Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, March 9, 2014 — Jurong Secondary defeated last year’s finalists Unity Secondary 45–31 in the second round of the National B Division Girls Basketball Championship. Nur Diyana (Jurong #9) led all scorers with 18 points. Four Unity players tied for five points apiece to lead their team in scoring.

The win puts Jurong joint-top of Group B along with Dunman Secondary. Both teams are currently holding 1–0 win–loss records.

The first half saw Jurong’s frontcourt dominate the game. Unity’s small lineup had no answer for Nur Shahidah (Jurong #12). She used her size to her advantage, snagging most of the rebounds. However, Unity managed to make the most of their easy baskets. They found themselves down only three points at the half-time break.

The third quarter saw possession change hands many times. Both teams were reckless in their passing, which resulted in a lot of turnoevers. Musrifah (Unity #12) brought her team to within one point with a three-pointer. However, they were unable go over the hump.

Something clicked for the Jurong offence in the final quarter, as they put up 24 points to wipe out Unity. Nur Khardiyanty (Jurong #4) and Nur Diyana (Jurong #9) combined for 15 points in the quarter. With the run, Jurong were able to seal the 45–31 win. They will next play Dunman Secondary on 14 April, Monday at 1:30pm. Unity Secondary will face Nanyang Girls’ High School at the same time on the adjacent court.

Jurong captain, Nur Shahidah (#15), said, “I feel very happy about the win. We are really determined to win the next game as well. Everyone played well individually today and this helped us to the win. Everyone in the group is tough and have their own strengths, so we will see how it unfolds.”
