Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Wednesday, March 9, 2014 — Chong Wei Kit of Singapore Sports School jumped a personal best of 1.66m to emerge the C division boys’ high jump champion on countback at the 55th National Inter-School Track & Field Championships. By doing so, he improved on his previous mark of 1.60m.

The C Division record is held by Wayne Yap of Hwa Chong Institution (HCI), who set the mark of 1.82m in 2006.

Darren Tan of Raffles Institution finished second, while HCI’s Ernest Ong clinched the bronze, his second medal of the meet after garnering a silver in the triple jump on April 4th.

The top three jumpers cleared the height of 1.66m. They were all unsuccessful in their three attempts at the next height of 1.69m. Hence, the title was decided on a countback. Wei Kit had the fewest number of failures at 1.66m, as he cleared the height on his first attempt. Thus, Wei Kit clinched the gold medal.

Wei Kit spoke about his win: “It feels awesome to win my first gold in Secondary Two. What is even sweeter is that I finally broke my personal best after half a year. I want to thank coach Valeri and coach Ralf for training me till this day. They have helped me become the athlete that I am today.”

The last time the three high jump medal winners finished with the same height at the Schools’ meet was in 2009, when Samuel Lim, Tan Wei Jie and Brian Wang cleared 1.77m in the B division boys’ competition.
