Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Monday, April 7, 2014 — Er Wen Han of Hwa Chong Institution clocked a personal best time of 10 minutes 9.31 minutes to win the C Division Boys’ 3000m at the 55th National Inter-School Track & Field Championships.

The meet record is held by Muthukumar of Saint Patrick’s School. He clocked a timing of 9:41.35 in 1999.

Thiruben s/o Thana Rajan of National Junior College (NJC) finished second in a time of 10:24.57. It was both his season’s and personal best time. Jacques Liao of Raffles Institution (RI) was third with 10:35.56.

Right from the gun, Wen Han raced out to a lead of about 20m after the first lap. He kept a fast pace throughout the race, gradually increasing the distance between him and second-placed Thiruben. This stayed that way till the end, with no runner threatening to usurp his position at any point in the race.

Wen Han said, “I think it was a tough race. Everyone pulled each other forward at the start with their pace. I really tried my best to go for the record today but I am happy with the win. I want to thank my teachers, coaches, friends and family. They have been consistently supporting me and encouraging me.”

Wen Han’s margin of victory was the largest since Muthukumar finished nearly 36 seconds ahead of the second-placed runner, en route to setting his championship record 15 years ago.

“The race was a bit tiring,” said Thiruben, who had been sick since the National Schools Cross Country Championships, where he had also finished second behind Wen Han. “I did as much as I could to keep pace with Wen Han, but I burned too much energy too fast. I am glad that I could post a personal best time.”
