Presbyterian High, Thursday, April 3, 2014 — Catholic High School (CHS) defeated Yishun Town Secondary (YTS) 2–1 in their final Round 2 group game in the National B Division Boys Volleyball Championship.
Before this game, Catholic High had already defeated both of their Round 2 group opponents to secure a semi-final spot, while Yishun Town had a 1–1 win-loss record and were eliminated with this loss.
Yishun Town took time to warm up their game and were level with Catholic High at 8–8 when they stepped up their game with better defensive blocks to deny Catholic High’s spikes. They took five points straight to lead 13–8.
Yishun Town continued to take the lead until John Foo (CHS #1) started to score points for Catholic High with his spikes which travelled sharply downward, making it difficult for his opponents to return. With that Catholic High chased back until they drew even with Yishun Town at 23–23. They went on to win 26–24 to take the first set.
In the second set, Teddy Teo (CHS #7) and Lee Han Bin (CHS #14) displayed good chemistry with their rallying and attacks. However, Catholic High made a few defensive mistakes towards the end to lose the set 23–25.
Both sides then went on to the deciding set. Although Yishun Town had a couple of good defensive blocks, and Jonathan Ang (YTS #9) was threatening with his strong spikes, Catholic High refused to give in. Phuah Cheng Jie (CHS #9) was impressive in the final set, saving his opponents’ spikes with consecutive digs just before the ball touched the ground.
Catholic High’s combined team effort ensured them a 25–20 win in the third set.
Catholic High will face Dunman in the semi-finals.
