Republic Polytechnic, Wednesday, April 2 , 2014 — Raffles Girls’ School (RGS) ensured qualification for the next round with a 40–22 win over Dunman Secondary (DMN) in the National B Division Girls Netball Championship.

Raffles Girls’ qualify top of their group with a 3–0 win–loss record.

The first quarter saw solid defence from RGS. Their Goal Keeper and Goal Defence did well to prevent successful shots from Dunman’s attackers within the goal circle. On offence, precise passing and good shooting saw RGS go on a 4–0 run to take the lead.

The second and third quarters saw Dunman threaten to make a come back, but RGS managed to contain them each time. RGS’s Goal Shooter shot really well through the two periods, making most of her shots within the goal circle. Errant passing from Dunman’s players caused their downfall, as RGS took advantage of turnovers to score on the other end. Dunman’s offence also suffered in the period, as they were unable to convert their goal attempts. They had three straight misses at one point.

After a quiet showing in the first three quarters, RGS’s offence exploded in the final quarter. They scored 15 goals in the period, almost equivalent to their total in the first half. This was fueled by good defence from RGS’s Goal Keeper, who intercepted multiple passes by fronting Dunman’s Goal Shooter. RGS’s Goal Attack and Wing Attack both combined well to feed their Goal Shooter within the goal circle. This allowed for their Goal Shooter to attempt easy shots near the basket. Raffles Girls’ eventually came away with the 40–22 win.

Raffles captain, Eyu Yan Yan, said, “I am happy that we were able to still pull through and come out on top. We are hoping for a good draw in the quarters. Every team will be strong from this round onwards and we will treat each game as if they were the finals.”

Raffles vice-captain, Julia Cheong, added, “We will take every game as it comes and play our best.”
