Meridian Junior College, Tuesday, April 1, 2014 — Meridian Junior College (MJC) overcame National Junior College (NJC) 4–0 in their opening game of the National A Division Football Championship.

This win takes MJC to the top of the Group C table on goal difference. Millennia Institute (MI), Yishun Junior College, and Innova Junior College (IJC) are the other teams in the group.

The visitors’ resolve was broken inside 13 minutes when Lucas Issac Lee (MJC #24) headed into the roof of the net from a corner by Syabil Anwar (MJC #7). 33 minutes into the game, Bryant Tan (MJC #21) added to the scoreline with a stunning drive from near the halfway line to make it 2-0.

NJC showed little in the way of an attacking threat, but it was the midfielders who lost the ball even before they had a chance to test the MJC defence. However, the NJC goalkeeper Tan Wei Xiang’s (#1) good command of his area helped his side throughout the half.

Soon Wei Jun (MJC #15) met a low cross into the box to triple the MJC lead after half time, before MJC earned themselves a penalty when Muhd Imran (MJC #16) was fouled in the box. Lucas Isaac Lee (MJC #24) kept his cool to send the goalkeeper the wrong way for the fourth goal.

NJC struggled to bring the ball up the field as MJC stole the ball and dominated both in possession and shots taken. Goalie Tan Wei Xiang (NJC #1) was instrumental in preventing a further onslaught, handling countless shots and one-on-one efforts well.

MJC face IJC next while NJC will play MI. Both games will take place on Friday, April 4, at 4.45pm.
